ServiceWare in STYLE (reprint
from 1990 IDEAS Catalog)
Most
eating utensils manufactured specifically for the elderly or
disabled are easy to hold and use. However, such serviceware
tends to be unattractive, according to the results of a recent
study conducted by a San Diego, California, industrial design
firm. What's more, "our study revealed, people often feel
self-conscious because they think using these utensils draws
attention to them, stereotyping them as old or physically impaired"
explained Glenda Rogov. "For example, we found the only
spoons available resembled bent pieces of metal, or they looked
like their handles were broken off and replaced with round pieces
of wood."
In
response, ROGOV's team designed and manufactured something both
useful and attractive. The resulting serviceware features contemporary
- looking stainless steel tongs, bowls and blades that are wide
for easy cutting and scooping of food and have highly stylized,
hard plastic handles that are gently rounded and easy to grasp.
Glenda
said that recent publicity concerning the utensils has sparked
interest among people of all ages, including many young people
who want a set for their parents, who have arthritis and, surprisingly,
a set for themselves.
